We're here!

After an extra 30 hours in Tacoma, Ross and I had a smooth, uneventful flight into Anchorage, arriving at about 1:30 PM (Alaska Time). Special thanks to Janet and Peter Stanley for their hospitality the last few days! Flying into Anchorage was amazing -- there are huge, snowcapped mountains on three sides of the city, marshes and bays on the other. Absolutely gorgeous, wild landscape. Set within this landscape is one of the bleakest cities I've ever been to. I now totally know why the guidebook referred to this place as "Los Anchorage".

However, we've found a nice little hostel with private rooms for the night, purchased our gear we couldn't take on the plane (mainly bear spray and camping fuel), and had some yummy pizza and brewed-in-house beer at "the Moose's Tooth".

We're leaving for Denali National Park tomorrow morning around 7:15. We should be in the park by early afternoon.

I'll post again when I can!

Good to hear that the volcanic air subsided and you arrived in Anchorage. I mentioned your comment "bleakest city" to Ray and learned he would like to live there. I will have a chance to see it for myself between now and the time you get back. Ray has business to conduct up there. I learned this after you left. He will be visiting Wasilla. I think you would go by the turn off for Wasilla. Consideration was given to staying in rural Wasilla but I read that it is off the beaten track and hard to find, a place called the Select Inn. Their website mentioned that they charge your credit card for "full payment at check in." I can only assume there must be a reason. Now Ray might enjoy staying there if he is on an "outdoor adventure" and the Select Inn mentions it serves outdoor adventure seekers. After reading your blog, Andrea, I am happy he did not pick this place. Perhaps, the "off the beaten track" and current cost of gas influenced his decision.

We will be back before your return on the 31st so, this will be short trip for us. We will not be seeing the area where you will be hiking. However, I will be able to say that I saw Anchorage.

More later, Georgine
